The city of Kenosha, incorporated in 1850, was originally called Pike Creek. Later the name was changed to Southport to reflect its importance as Wisconsin's southern most shipping port. When the city incorporated, it chose the name Kenosha. Located roughly half-way between Chicago and Milwaukee, Kenosha, was and is an important industrial and manufacturing city. The Nash Motor Company, later known as American Motors, had its headquarters here. Today's industrial residents include Snap-On Incorporated, a world leader in hand tools, G. Leblanc Corporation, the nation's oldest and largest manufacturer of wind instruments, and Ocean Spray Cranberries, a maker of 100% cranberry products. These and many other manufacturers help make Kenosha a vital part of the economic growth and stability of the entire area. Click to view larger pic, close new window to return

Kenosha is home to a number of fine parks scattered throughout the city, several of which are located along the shoreline. In fact, 86% of the city's lakefront is dedicated to parks and public use. The park system boasts 24 soccer fields, 44 softball and hardball diamonds of various types, some with lights, 4 volleyball courts, 5 horseshoe pits and 17 tennis courts. There is also a variety of walkways, trails and paths for hiking, biking, rollerblading or just taking a stroll along the lakefront. The Pike Trail  is an on & off road trail that starts near Anderson Park on the south end of the city, north through Pennoyer Park on the north end. Connecting with other trails, you could continue north through Racine and Milwaukee Counties.
There is ample space to take an evening stroll along the lake and enjoy the scenic beauty of the Lake Michigan shoreline. Southport and Wolfenbuttel parks, both marinas and Kennedy and Pennoyer parks all provide walkways for your pleasure. The Harbor side Promenade has been expanded to offer a unique view of Wisconsin's southernmost  port. Five of the parks have beaches.  Three of these have lifeguard supervision. The Kenosha Sesquicentennial Band shell holds free concerts under the stars during the summer. And let's not forget about the Washington Park Velodrome, the nation's oldest bicycle racing track, which offers free bicycle racing in the summer.

Kenosha has a wide variety of retail stores, specialty gift shops, antique shops and outlet stores located in the area. In the downtown area you will find 18th-century antiques, authentic Italian foods, small specialty shops and a historic soda fountain. The Original Outlet Mall, featuring nearly 100 manufacturers' stores, and Prime Outlets, with over 70 name-brand and designer outlets offering merchandise at unbelievable savings, are located minutes from downtown Kenosha, off Interstate 94. Starting this year, Kenosha has restored operation of the electric streetcar which connects the Lakeshore Business District and the new Harbor Park lakefront development with the Metra train station and links to Chicago and Milwaukee.
